I am Richard Davies and I am running for the position of LGBT Social Secretary! I am coming to the end of my first year of Architecture, and have been a member of the LGBT since arriving here in Portsmouth back in October. I have attended the society’s trips to London and Brighton, and have been to many of its social ‘gatherings’, including regular attendance of the Wednesday meetings and consequent booze-ups.
I am an outgoing, sociable and most importantly approachable individual, who wants to see the LGBT be even bigger and better than ever. As a society I think so much more should and can be made of our social-side. I hope to provide the social platform to make the society seem more approachable and welcoming to all, whether they be Gay, Transgender, Bi or even just Curious.
Over the past few months I have formed strong communicative ties with members of the local LGBT community, foremost of which is my contacts with the Hampshire Boulevard, where many of our Wednesday nights have been spent socialising both within and outside the society.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year here at Portsmouth as a member of the LGBT, and would love to be in a position to make other student’s experiences as fun and enjoyable as mine has been and more.
I have a number of aims I wish to achieve as Social Secretary for the LGBT.
If elected I want to;
Set up more regular trips, decided upon by the members for the members. Trips which are well organised for more enjoyment and better experiences.
Keep more contact with the Students Union, to which all students are members. The Union is there for all students and we should make the most of it.
I think meetings should be held in the union, or at least alternating between the union and current location, providing a more universally approachable society.
Interact more with other university LGBT societies, through multi-Uni events and socials.

Richard studies a degree that requires him to be organised, professional and to always think on the large scale. It is the qualities that are evident within an excellent Social Secretary.
Richard has been involved with the society throughout the year, which has provided him with the experience of how things are currently set up; this has allowed him to make clear ideas about how he would like to see the society move forward in the coming year, with the aim of improving current good practice and introducing new, that may work better for our members.
It is clear from Richards’ social personality that he will have no issue as social secretary, getting to know any of the members joining in the coming year. I particularly admire how closely he wishes to work with the members to ensure that every social or event the society is doing is exactly what they want. It is for these reasons that I have a belief that Richard will fill the large and busy role of Social Secretary with ease and great ability.
