Molly Araba Acquaisie
When I joined the UPSU LGBT in October 2007, I was not quite sure if it was the right thing to do because there seemed to be some sort of stigma attached to our society. However, I have come to realise the horror stories are not true; I have been welcomed with open arms, some of the funniest moments of my life have happened whilst being part of our society.
Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as me to be in a society with members such as yourselves. There seems to be an ever growing number of people reluctant to join our society, some of them being my best friends. This is because they have not been able to see our society for what it really is. Working hand in hand with our other committee members, I hope to promote our society to others, to show it in a new light, and to make it appealing and approachable to others.
I am computer literate and have set up a number of internet forums for various reasons, personal and academic. At the moment, our LGBT website seems to be slightly inactive, I aim to improve that and increase its general use. I currently maintain a forum on Facebook, which is a group I set up for my course mates. It includes information such as coursework deadlines, exam dates and any department meetings we have. Before I came to university, I managed the website for a club night in my hometown and also created fliers for my friends in bands. I feel that these skills would be an advantage in my role as Media Officer.
I have had an amazing time so far in the year that I have been part of this society and I feel that in this role, I can show my gratitude and appreciation to members of our society. I can do this by passing on to other people the fun, the laughs and the good friends I have made whilst being a member, in the hope that they too can shed any misconceptions they have about UPSU LGBT and join us.
With this, I hope I am the right candidate for you.

Molly Acquaisie is applying for Media Officer of the LGBT society. I have participated in many activities with her both as a member of our society and as a student on her course. Molly maintains a group on Facebook for our course which gives out information about coursework, exam results and she always promotes any socials we have. She also occasionally sends out text messages to everyone when there is a meeting or a room change for a lecture or seminar. Molly has always been computer savvy and eager to work hard at whatever it is she is trying to aim for. I believe she possesses the skills needed to be Media Officer. If she only puts a fraction of the effort used for her coursework group towards our LGBT society, I believe she could work wonders.

Having already served as part of the UPSU LGBT committee, I am aware of the responsibilities and demands any position presents, and am eager to continue to uphold and satisfy those responsibilities. Being a part of the LGBT has been an overwhelmingly positive and happy experience for me, and it would mean a great deal to me if I could be given that chance again.
I am currently in my second year of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and I enjoy it very much. The course outline often demands group presentations to be carried out as part of my assessment. Therefore, I have become used to addressing a large group of people and do not get daunted by having to do so. In addition to this I am also competent using various presentation programmes. Also, I am used to working to deadlines, and respect the need for organisation because of this. Therefore, if elected, I will strive to make sure I am able to devote my time equally between my course and my duties as Media Officer.
One reason why I would love to become the society’s Media Officer is that I enjoy having the opportunity to be creative. The position would entail producing tickets, posters etc which would give me the opportunity to present my artistic talent. I would be able to promote the activities of the LGBT whilst simultaneously including my individual flair. I firmly believe that attention to detail and taking extra care when working on something you feel passionate about makes a world of difference.
Overall, I believe I am a caring and diplomatic person and if elected would do my best to bring any ideas that might benefit the society to light. I am always up for trying something new and having a laugh, and am always open to suggestions and ideas. I enjoy working as part of a group, but am able to work individually if needed. Also, I am sensible and pragmatic, as well as being eager to meet new people and I believe that these qualities would help me to achieve the aims of Media Officer.
In the short time that I have been a member of the LGBT I have seen myself grow into a person that this time last year I did not realise I was capable of being. I have felt what it is like to be totally accepted for who I am, and have met an incredible group of people, many of whom I am proud to call life-long friends. With this in mind the main reason why I want to become Media Officer for the LGBT is that I want to continue promoting, and enjoying, a society whose importance and significance is paramount.

Chris’ natural flair for design and eye for detail are one of the most important factors which make him ideal for designing the society’s website and promotional materials. As well as the artistic drive which Chris could bring to the society, he would also be able to provide a crucial support net for the rest of the committee in the first few stages as he has already had experience working as part of the LGBT committee this year.
Chris is extremely focused and puts in 100% to ensure the smooth running of the society. I’m sure that he would thrive under the role of media officer and help to develop the society further; not only by the materials he produces but by the positive attitude and dedication that he puts into the society.
With Chris’ committee experience and his fantastic warmth and openness I feel that he would be a fantastic asset to next year’s committee.
